Although soil may seem to be solid, only about half of the soil volume consists of solid material; the other half consists of pore spaces filled with air and water. The solid material is derived from rocks that are a part of the earth’s crust and only 5% of the solids, in an ideal soil, will consist of organic matter. In the water and water films of the pore spaces are enormous populations of soil microorganisms. It is estimated that there are greater than two trillion microorganisms per pound of soil and over 10,000 different species in a single gram of soil! These microorganisms play a tremendous role in a number of necessary processes for healthy plant growth. Soil microorganisms break down a wide variety of materials that no other lifeforms can degrade, including leaves, stems, trees, animal waste, and other organic – and inorganic – matter.
